Synopsis:
The PETERSENS were members of a Mormon Colonization expedition. With the North and South torn by Civil War, they made their way westward in a covered wagon and arrived in St. Joseph, MO in the fall of 1860. Then they went to Omaha, NE by steamboat to stay in the Mormon Camp at Florence (North Omaha). While there, Sine's father learned that polygamy was being practiced by the Mormons in Utah; so, with several other members of the pioneering expedition, revolted, and abandoned the trip westward. These people joined the reorganized branch of the Mormon Church, the Josephites. Sine was baptized into this branch and her father was the first missionary of that faith to preach in the old settlement of Desota, NE. The PETERSENs lived on 10th Street in Omaha, near where the Union Station now stands. After the marriage of their daughter, they made their home in Washington County, at the home of Soren JENSEN for several years until their deaths in 1885 and 1887. They are buried in the JENSEN plot in the Blair Cemetery. Jens PETERSEN was buried 6 Oct 1885; Ane J. PETERSEN was buried 1 Jun 1887. (Paraphrased from The Family of Soren and Anne Sine (PETERSEN) JENSEN, 1842-1974)
As noted by the names of the children, the Jens PETERSENs followed the Scandinavian custom of changing the names of his children to JENSEN, son of Jens. This means that Jens PETERSEN was probably the son of a Peter JENSEN. One of the sons, either Peter or Jens Peter is probably the Peder JENSEN with wife Margreth, and children Anna, Sabina, Peter, Nils, and Mary living with Jens PETERSEN in the 1880 Census.
