Will 10 Feb 1780 (#332, p. 88) Probated 21 Oct 1783. Stipulated 7 daughters, listed 8. Given the birthdates and the order in which the children are listed, this researcher suspects (and listed accordingly above) that Cary and Elizabeth are one in the same - Cary Elizabeth. Listed children do not agree with list above - trying to resolve issues. Children listed in will are: Corey (Cary), Elizabeth, Hannah, Catherine, Phebe, Sarah, Martha, Lydia, John, Jonathan, Jacomick, Jeremiah, Jonah and Charles. Other sources list children above and it is possible that younger sons are not in the will because they had moved away. Also, I haven't found a "Jacomick" in any other reference. Perhaps that is a first or middle name for one of the other sons - Charles, Peter or William. Still searching!
The Deed Book of Berkley County, VA (now WV) includes the following notes - with the issues around the several Jonathans, Jonahs, Jonases, etc., these are recorded here for reference and this researcher has no indication of which ones belong to which of the group. More creativity in naming children would have made this much easier!
Jonathan SIMMONS/SEAMONS (b. c1705) [probably a cousin to this Jonathan] purchased a 317-acre tract of land from Joseph MOUNTS and his wife Katherine on 9 Jan 1736. This tract was part of PAULSON, JONES and MOUNTS' 834-acre patent land. (Tract 29A, Map1) On 6 October 1762, it was sold by Jonathan's son and heir, Jonathan, to VAN SEARINGEN. Jonathan Sr. was living on Thomas ANDERSON's north half of the 542-acre patent land (Tract 144B, Map4) by December 1737.
Jonathan Sr. was deceased by 11 November 1743 when his wife Elizabeth was appointed Administratrix of his estate, leaving two sons as orphans; John/Jonas/Jonah and Jonathan, and two daughters; Phebe and Elizabeth. On 6 May 1745, Jonathan (b. c1730) purchased the northern half (271 1/2 acres where his father had lived, 8 May 1738) of Thomas ANDERSON's 1735 patent land containing 542 acres for 20 pounds. His mother Elizabeth MITCHELL, the wife of William MITCHELL, released her right of dower as widow of Jonathan SEAMON, deceased.
Jonathan received a Fairfax grant for 720 acres on the Opequon Creek, located three miles east of present-day Inwood, Berkeley County, West Virginia, on 10 July 1762. (between Tract 10 and 13, Map4) His will, written 6 September 1777 and proved on 15 March 1785, left his entire estate to sister Phebe. (See #104/105)
At the request by Jonas SEAMON, a warrant was issued by the Clerk of the Proprietors Office on 2 August 1750 for a survey of 205-plus acres "where he lives within a survey made for Noah HAMPTON (Tract 176, Map4) (60 acres) and bought of Colbert ANDERSON" adjacent to Peter McCAIN (formerly William MITCHELL's); the survey was completed on 9 April 1754. He received two Fairfax grants out of the "HAMPTON Survey": one for the above 206 acres on 6 June 1760 (Tract 176A, Map4), and the other for 389 acres on 9 June 1760. (Tract 176B) This land is adjacent east of present-day U.S. Highway 11 and north of West Virginia Highway 51 at Inwood.
Jonah's (Jonas) will, written on 10 January 1780 and proved 21 October 1783, left seven daughters; Cary, Elizabeth, Hannah, Catherine, Phebe, Sarah, Martha, Lydia and six sons; John, Jonathan, Jacomiah, Jeremiah, Jonah and Charles. Jonas' sons John, Jonathan and Jacomiah paid Colbert ANDERSON (grandson of Thomas, son of Colbert and his wife Ann) 900 pounds on 9 September 1780 for the land their father had bought from Colbert's father and for which he had received Fairfax grants in 1760.
A Jonathan SIMONS/SEAMONS "of Jerusalom in the Township of Hempstead in Queens County on the Island of Nausaw in the Province of New York" sold 1/3 of a 1,000-acre tract to Joseph SEAMONS; this transaction was recorded in Orange County, New York on 12 December 1735. (probably Jonathan #416/417)
John SEAMON of Orange County, New York purchased 1,000 acres (part of 2,930-acre patent land from the Colony of 3 October 1734) from Jost HITE and wife Mary on 26 October 1737 for 30 pounds. He sold the 1,000 acres on 21 November 1744 to Nimrod HOTT of Prince William County, Virginia for 70 pounds. John had received a bond to guarantee a patent in the amount of 200 pounds from Jost HITE which John transferred to HOTT/HOLT. (Tract 126A, Map9)
Berkeley County (W)VA Deed Book
v.3, 1784-1786, p. 76 lists:
15 Aug 1774, Jonas Seaman and wife Jane Seaman sold 129 acres for 200 pounds
to son John Seaman on Lick Branch of Opequon Creek, part of a tract of 389
acres.
