Synopsis:
Occupations: Farmer, Sawmill (1853-1869) and Gristmill owner, founder of Shell Rock, Butler Co, IA, Hotel owner (1867-1878)
Elizabeth Ellen (SMITH) ADAIR was listed as a hotelkeeper in the 1880 IA Census
G.W. was visiting his son, William Walter, in Smith Center, Smith Co, KS, when he died. It was winter and he was buried in Smith Center with the intention of moving his body to Shell Rock at a later time. The family never had the money to move him, so he's still in Smith Center. There is a monument to him which, to all appearances, is a grave stone, in the Riverside Cemetery, Shell Rock, Butler Co, IA. This compiler located and photographed his actual grave in the cemetery of Smith Center, KS, near his daughter, Lucy and her husband, Ralph Bowen.

INTERVIEW/ARTIFACTS RECORDS
WRITINGS/HISTORIES/NEWSPAPERS/MAGAZINE RECORDS
Text from page 315 of the History of Butler Co in a section on his son, George: George Washington ADAIR was born near Lexington, VA, 31 October 1813, and the mother's birth occurred in MI, 24 Mar 1824 [Note: she probably was born in OH, not MI]. Coming to Iowa, he settled in Muscatine Co, east of West Liberty in 1837. He was accompanied by his younger brother, William. In the same year Elizabeth SMITH arrived in company with her father and settled in the same locality. They were married at Cedar Rapids in 1840 and there resided until 1853. In 1849, attracted by the discovery of gold in California, Mr. ADAIR drove an ox team across the country to the Pacific coast, being absent from home for two years. He was in hopes that the trip would benefit his health and found that it did. He spent some time in the mines, returning in in 1851, and the following year, in 1852, came to Butler Co. Here he purchased forty acres of land of Alex GLENN, and the following year purchased more land from Aaron MOORE. Twelve blocks of the city of Shell Rock have been laid out on the forty acre tract which he purchased in 1852. The plat was recorded in 1855. It was in the spring of 1853 that he moved his family here, and that year he built a sawmill and dam across the Shell Rock River. He operated the mill, sawing for settlers, and he also rafted timber down to Waterloo. He continued in the mill until 1869. However, in the meantime, in 1867, he opened a hotel known as the Shell Rock House, and conducted it until 1878, when he went to Kansas to visit a son and daughter. He died at Smith Center, that state, on the 3rd of September, 1879. He was most prominently identified with industrial activity in this Co at an early day. He built, between 1855 and 1857, the west side flouring mill in connection with his brother William, and soon after they sold their grist-mill to John F. WRIGHT. In 1867, in company with E.W. METZGAR, he built the east side flouring mill, which he operated for a number of years. He was thus closely associated with the business development of the community, and his enterprises were of untold value to the early settlers, who depended upon his operations for breadstuffs and for lumber. He was one of the incorporators of the first Methodist Episcopal church and erected the first house of worship in Shell Rock, it being the first church organized in the Co. He took an active and helpful part in the church work throughout the remainder of his life and his wife was equally earnest in her cooperation with all that pertained to the moral development of the community. He was earnest in his support of the temperance cause and in politics he was a democrat but never took an active part in politics aside from casting his ballot. He labored untiringly, however, to check the use of alcoholic beverages and was a member of the Independent Order of Good Templars, the meetings of which were held in his house. His life was indeed one of usefulness to the community and his worth was acknowledged by all who knew him. His wife survived him for almost a quarter of a century and died in Shell Rock in 1902. She shared with him in all his good work for the benefit of his fellowmen and many have reason to bless their memory.
Text from History of Butler Co, p. 695: In the spring of 1853, George W. ADAIR came looking for a home. He stopped at Mr. GLENN's, and the latter gentleman sold him forty acres on the east side of the river on section 11, where the town of Shell Rock now is, which was all heavy timber, except that taken up by the bed of the river. George W. ADAIR was born in Lexington, Virginia, October 31st, 1813. Shortly after his birth, his parents moved to Ohio and in that State his early life was passed. When he was seventeen years of age, the family moved to La Grange Co, Indiana. Here he continued his education in the common schools, and helped his father work their farm. At the age of twenty-six, he moved to Iowa and settled near Muscatine. At that place he was married, January 17th, 1841, to Miss Elizabeth SMITH, who was a native of Ohio. In 1853, as before stated, they came to Shell Rock, being the first settlers on the town plat, and moved into their log cabin on the first day of June. Soon after their settlement here, Mr. ADAIR began the erection of a saw mill, and in the fall of 1854, laid out the village of Shell Rock, he having entered the land upon which it now stands. He was of the democratic party, and although not caring for office, he always took an active part in his country's politics. Mr. ADAIR, in the company with others, built both grist mills of the town and his great aim in life was the building up of a village of which he was the founder and pioneer settler. He died while on a visit to Kansas, on the 4th day of September, 1879. His wife still survives him and is the oldest living settler of the village. Nine children were born to them - Mary Jane, now the wife of Ephraim TOWN; John, now living in Winnipeg; Lucy A., now the wife of R.D. BOWEN, of Kansas; George, living at Shell Rock; Walter, living in Clarinda, Iowa; Elizabeth, now the wife of Allen ALLBURN, of Sioux City; Sadie; Blanche; and Nettie.

from The Andrew RALSTON Annals. ADAIR Number. November 10, 1933. See also #114/115, Andrew RALSTON. Chief Yellow Thunder. It was a fine historical gesture to have Chief Albert Yellow Thunder, of Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin, as a distinguished guest at the Shell Rock Reunion together with his 13-year-old son, Chadwick Yellow Thunder. The Chief is a veteran of the Spanish-American War, and had previously been in the government service for a considerable period. he is a grandson of the famous Chief Yellow Thunder, of the Winnebagoes, who died in 1974, and who travelled up and down the trail along the Shell Rock River, no doubt, in 1853, when George Washington ADAIR and William Andrew ADAIR laid out the Town of Shell Rock. For the past ten years the Chief has been lecturing before churches, high schools, the Y.M.C.A. and the Boy Scouts, and he is at present clerk of the First American Indian Baptist Church of Wisconsin Dells, Wis. The historical contrast is that as the tomahawk of a Delaware Indian almost wiped out the family of John RALSTON, our presumed ancestor, somewhere in the Lehigh or Susquehanna Valley in colonial Pennsylvania, leaving only our Andrew RALSTON, and his brother, Joseph RALSTON, of Kings Creek Valley, Virginia, to survive, Chief Yellow Thunder can now come to us some 175 years afterwards, mingle with us as a Christian gentleman, and deliver a fine address in the First Baptist Church of Shell Rock, at the religious services in connection with the reunion. The Delaware Indians were originally known as the Leni-Lanape, migrating from the Western Mississippi Valley to the Delaware and the Hudson prior to the colonization of Pennsylvania. They took the name of Delaware from the river after their migration. Following the iniquitous "Walking Purchase" perpetrated upon them, they retired to the Ohio Valley, built their towns and kept up an intermittent warfare against the settlements of Pennsylvania. It was in one of these raids that the family of John RALSTON was almost wiped out. These historical facts are more detailed in the history. We enjoyed Chief Yelow [sic] Thunder's visit greatly, and he should visit us also when we dedicate the monument. If the reunioners decide to go to Utah for the 1935 reunion, there should also be a representative there of some of the Indian tribes with whom that fine pioneering and courageous woman, Hannah HUNTSMAN DAVIS, contacted in establishing her Western home.
from The Andrew RALSTON Annals. ADAIR Number. November 10, 1933. See also #114/115, Andrew RALSTON. We have met the ADAIRS and we were theirs. The Holding of the fourth annual reunion at Shell Rock, Iowa, was a fine family gesture, and afforded a very large group of the RALSTON clan a chance to meet each other. Henry E. RALSTON, of Tipton, Iowa, thus expresses it: "I had never met but two of my RALSTON relatives, Andrew J. RALSTON and D.C. RALSTON (Arctic pioneers), sons of Uncle Lewis WALTEMYER RALSTON, and then I was but a boy of eight years. I did not vision that there was a tree of which I was a small twig that had so many sturdy branches from the towering trunk that gave the name its real significance, until I met at the reunion you folks and learned of the others who were not there. Then it was that I became proud of the fact that I was of the RALSTON clan, and I wished that you all might be as proud of the fact as I am." Mary RALSTON was the third child of Andrew and Sophia WALTEMYER RALSTON, born in York Co, Penn'a., August 26, 1790. She married William ADAIR, September 8, 1908, living first at Carlisle. They pioneered into the Shenandoah Valley, Virginia, near Staunton, where the first three children: Benjamin Franklin ADAIR, John Newton ADAIR and George Washington ADAIR were born. In a few years, we find them neighbors to the parents at Bloomfield, Ohio, whence in 1829 they pioneered into LaGrange Co, Indiana. Mary ADAIR died there in 1831, and William ADAIR further pioneered out to Muscatine and Cedar Rapids, Iowa. History records that they lived where Cedar Rapids now stands, when there was but a log house there. He died in that community and is buried near Wilton Junction. Benjamin Franklin ADAIR died without issue. John Newton ADAIR remained in Ohio, settling in the Leesville community where his family became quite prominent, three of them being lawyers, and William ADAIR, serving two terms in the Ohio legislature. George Washington ADAIR went on up the Cedar and Shell Rock Rivers, and located the new town of Shell Rock in 1855, in company with his brother William Andrew ADAIR, after having built the dam and flour mill in 1853. George Washington ADAIR was a "Forty-niner" to California, but soon returned back East. The Reunion. August 18th was a beautiful day and George ADAIR's woods never looked prettier. The younger RALSTONs explored the river up and down and gathered specimens of the peculiar shell rock, and thus gathered appetites for the fine noon meal, while the older ones visited. The meal was up to the RALSTON standard, and was greatly enjoyed by all. After taking the group picture, Hon. Ada ADAIR GARNER, only woman member of the Iowa Legislature, called the meeting to order. her older brother Claude ADAIR delivered the following address of welcome: "Friends and Relatives: We of this community feel a particular pleasure in welcoming our relatives from the east, the west, the north and the south. Family pride is a virtue when it inspires virtue. When one knows that he is born of good stock, he has the right to a feeling of self-respect due to just that single fact. he may properly congratulate himself on having as forbears men and women of a wholesome sort, possessed of intelligence, industry and integrity. Whatever may be the disputes of the learned as to the extent of the influence of heredity on the human mind and character, we know for a certainty that qualities are definitely transmitted in families and that ability and merit run with the blood, just as surely as do form and features for the body, to equal, even to surpass his own person, the virtues of those from whom he derived his being. For ourselves we have reason doubly to rejoice. Our family in the past has accomplished much to make it respected and distinguished among men, and those of this generation have not been found wanting. on the contrary, our men and women of t-day in their various fields of activity are demonstrating anew those sterling qualities of our race that have made it honorable in the past. All honor to our tribe, and may we and those to follow us be worthy. May our deeds and lives add to its renown. hail to the name of RALSTON. And now, on behalf of our venerable President, who has seen years and many changes pass before him, I welcome you to the State of Iowa, where the West begins and where the tall corn grows, and to each and all who are present here to-day. i welcome you to this beautiful spot by the Shell Rock River, which from childhood I have known as home, and may you each and all have a pleasant day." The Historian responded to this admirable address of welcome and gave a sketch of RALSTON history. Forest ADAIR and Vernon GARNER sang a pretty duet: "When It's Lamplighting Time in the Valley," and the reunioners joined lustily in the Iowa corn song. At the business session the plan of Dr. Cora RALSTON, of Steubenville, Ohio, that each RALSTON send in as many pennies as they are years old for the 1934 monument fund, was unanimously approved. It was voted to hold the Fifth Annual Reunion, August 18, 1934, at Beech Spring Presbyterian Church, Hopedale, Ohio, to dedicate the monument.

Synopsis:
Ephraim was a farmer in VT until 1855 when he
migrated to Shell Rock where he worked in the old saw mill through the first
winter. In the spring, he began working as a millwright in the
gristmill.
In 1873, he began a hardware business for 3 years
In 1876, he began a lumber and grain business for 3 years
He held offices of mayor and justice of the peace in Shell Rock
Ephraim TOWN at Find A Grave. The name of Ephraim TOWN is closely associated with the history of Shell Rock, where he established the first hardware store in 1873. He has since been identified with the other lines of business and at all times has been a progressive citizen, his labors contributing to general prosperity and advancement as well as to individual success. Born in Franklin, Vermont, April 15, 1832, he is a son of Ephraim and Jane (WILLIS) TOWN, the former a native of the Green Mountain state, while the latter was born near Queenstown, Canada, just across the Vermont border. Both died in Franklin, Mr. TOWN on the 13th of March, 1864, at the age of seventy-three years, nine months and twenty-two days and Mrs. TOWN March 18, 1884, at the age of eighty-three years, one month and twenty-nine days. The TOWN and WILLIS families are both of English origin. Ephraim TOWN, Sr., was a soldier in the War of 1812 and in the days of peace followed agricultural pursuits. He was twice married and by the first union had three daughters, while the children of the second marriage were eleven in number, two daughters and nine sons. Ephraim TOWN, whose name introduces this review, pursued his education in the schools of Vermont and remained in that state until twenty-two years of age. He spent the winter of 1854 in Chicago, hauling grain to the boats, and in the spring of 1855 he arrived in Shell Rock. The following year he began work at the carpenter's trade in connection with the construction of mills here. He followed carpentering for a number of years and with Hiram Ross operated a planning mill and made the first coffin used for an interment in the Shell Rock cemetery. Later, Mr. TOWN became actively connected with merchandising as one of the proprietors of the first hardware store of Shell Rock, being in partnership with J.D. POWERS. The business was established in 1873 and was conducted for three years when the firm became Town & Murray. Mr. TOWN next engaged in the lumber and grain business as a member of the firm of Phillips, Town & Company, continuing in that line for three years and subsequently he spent a number of years in the creamery business. He has always manifested enterprise, energy and determination in carrying on his business affairs and has ever been found thoroughly reliable as well as progressive. He always enjoyed good health until 1912, when he suffered a slight stroke of apoplexy. He is a man of splendid physique, being six feet and two inches in height and weighing usually two hundred pounds. Mr. TOWN has some valuable land holdings, consisting of considerable town property and three hundred and sixty acres of valuable farming land. In 1895 he retired from active business, having sold out his creamery and now lives a retired life in his beautiful home on the banks of the Shell Rock River. He is a fine type of highly successful business man, entirely self-made, coming here without a dollar and now one of the most prosperous men in the country. In 1860 in Shell Rock, Mr. TOWN was united in marriage to Miss Mary Jane ADAIR, who was born in Linn County, Iowa, October 6, 1841, and came to this county with her parents, George W. and Elizabeth ADAIR. She died in Shell Rock, June 19, 1895, leaving five children; Charles, who is engaged in the hardware business with his brother, Willis, at Dumont, this county; Ella L., the wife of Arthur AUSTIN, of Shell Rock; Willis, of Dumont; Dana E., a resident farmer of Shell Rock township; and Flora E., the wife of Fred G. McINROY. Since the mother's death, Mr. and Mrs. McINROY have resided with Mr. TOWN. In fact she has acted as her father's housekeeper from the age of thirteen. In politics Mr. TOWN has been a lifelong democrat. He was elected the first mayor of Shell Rock and has served for three terms since then. His administration has been characterized by needed reforms and improvements and his public record is a most creditable one. For many years he was justice of the peace and his decisions have ever been strictly fair and impartial. He has also been a member of the school board for many years and for twenty years served as its president and was a member of the building committee at the time of the erection of the new school. He has been identified with the school board altogether for thirty years and the cause of education finds in him a stalwart champion, whose labors in its behalf have been effective and far-reaching. Since the organization of the Methodist Episcopal Church in Shell Rock his name has been on its membership roll. In fact he was a member of the official board when the church was organized and he was a member of the building committee at the time of the erection of the present house of worship. He belongs to Escallop Lodge, No. 261, A.F. & A.M., of which he has been treasurer for many years; Methro Chapter, R.A.M., of Waverly; Baldwin Commandery, K.T., of Cedar Falls; and El Kahir Temple, A.A.O.N.M.S., of Cedar Rapids. He has also attained the thirty-second degree of the Scottish Rite and belongs to the Eastern Star. His life exemplifies the beneficent spirit of the craft and throughout his entire career he has closely followed the principles which he has adopted. He is now a venerable citizen of eighty-one years and receives the respect and honor which should ever be accorded one of his years whose life has been well spent. Everyone in Shell Rock knows Ephraim TOWN and none speak of him except in terms of praise.

Synopsis:
from The Andrew RALSTON Annals, The ADAIR Number, 10 Nov 1933. We used to think that all of the tall-timber RALSTONs were raised around Bloomfield, Ohio, but there are quite a lot of them in the middle West. Here is one of them, Harry H. ADAIR, of Sioux City, Iowa, an outstanding business man of that progressive western town. He is a son of John ADAIR, who lived to be our oldest RALSTON, reaching the advanced age of 87 years, 9 months and 4 days. Lewis Waltemyer RALSTON, the historian's grandfather lived 87 years, 2 months and 28 days. Our grand old man, George ADAIR is fast approaching these records. All three of these grew to be six feet tall, plus. John ADAIR marched with Sherman's army to the sea, along with John Carter RALSTON, and James A. GRAHAM, and perhaps they never knew each other as buddies in the army. But they gave their best to win the conflict, along with fourteen other Civil War soldiers of the clan which the history will record.

Synopsis:
p. 486, Smith Co, KS 1880 Census: Mr. and Mrs. Ralph D. BOWEN were pioneer residents of Smith Center, having come to this city in the spring of 1875 after living on their homestead in Lane township for nearly three years. Their claim, on which they filed in 1872, was five miles west of here or a mile east of where later the village of Athol was located. Mr. BOWEN was born in Trumbull, Ohio, in 1840. He enlisted in the Civil war July 11, 1861, in the Second Infantry Cavalry and participated in all the battles of his command. He was wounded in a skirmish in the second battle at Corinth and was mustered out in the fall of 1864. In 1866 he and Lucy Ann Adair were united in marriage in Iowa. All the many years the Bowens lived in this city, their home was on North Grant, about where Mrs. J.C. Behnke lives at the present time. Mr. Bowen was a blacksmith by trade and his shop was on Court street, directly across the street north from Community Hall. He followed this business all the time, except about two years when he bought and published the Pioneer. He changed the political trend of the paper to that of the Democratic party and those two years has been the only time in eighty years that it has not been a republican newspaper. For years Mr. Bowen started the celebration of Independence Day at four o'clock in the morning by firing salutes for an hour or so, using the anvil in his shop. He never missed one fourth of July morning for many years or until his last illness came upon him. Children used to remind their parents to awaken them early so they could hear the loud noises. Mr. and Mrs. Bowen were the parents of eight children, the oldest, Herbert H. (Bert), became a Methodist minister, although he others of the family were members of the Christian church and Mrs. Bowen was a charter member of that denomination when it was organized in Smith Center. The second child, a daughter, Millie, married Almond Thompson, a brother of Mrs. W.H. Nelson and they soon moved to Pennsylvania; Carrie first married Clare Holmes, then a few years after his death she married Fleming \Williams of the Stuart vicinity. She graduated with the third class of the city high school, in 1893; Stella married Harl Turner and moved out west. She was a graduate of 1895; Walter, a graduate of 1897, married Chole Starbuck; Grace married Emil Weber, she was a 1902 graduate; Mabel, graduate of 1904, married Ben Bedell. The youngest of the family, Ruth, graduate of 1905, married Harry Gladman. Mabel is the only one of the children now living. She resides in Pine Bluff, Colorado. The father died in the early twenties and is buried in Fairview cemetery. After his passing, Mrs. BOWEN went to California to live with the daughter, Grace, and died there in 1925. Members of this BOWEN family, now living in Smith Co are three grandaughters: the two sisters, Naomi, Mrs. Ern Wineinger and Irene, Mrs. C.L. Blew, daughters of Walter BOWEN and now proprietors of the Style Shop in this city. Carol, the third one, is Mrs. Vern KENNEDY, a daughter of the late Carrie BOWEN WILLIAMS. Carol and her husband live on the home farm in Webster township.
p.39: CENTER TOWNSHIP HOMESTEADERS: Mitchel HAYS. Mitchell HAYS came to Smith Co in July 1877 and lived on his homestead in Center township for the rest of the years of his life. The home was just one mile south of town, the southeast 160 acres in section 28. His wife was Harriet E. BOWEN HAYS, a sister of the once well known R. D. BOWEN of this city.
p. 176 (from the article on Lee STARBUCK): Chloe was born in Indianola, Iowa, in 1879. She came here from Nebraska with her parents in 1890 and grew to young womanhood in this city. On June 13, 1900, she was united in marriage with G. Walter BOWEN, a Smith Center native. They lived here for several years, then moved to Concordia where they made their home until Walter's death in 1943. Chloe then moved back to this city where lived her two daughters, Naomi and Irene. Naomi was first married to Judge Tom KENNETT of Concordia and they had one son, Tom Jr., now living in Phoenix, Arizona. A few years after the death of Judge KENNETT, Naomi became the wife of G.E. WINEINGER of Smith Center. He died in 1959 and she still lives here. For several years she and Irene owned and operated the Style Shop. Irene and her husband, C.L. BLEW are now living at Jacksonville, Florida. Mr. BLEW, who was a Captain in the U.S. Navy and a Chief Medical Officer, is now retired. Their children are Nancy and Michael. Chloe died August 21, 1952.
Ralph D. BOWEN enlisted at age 21 on 4 Sep 1861 as a Private in Co. M, IA 2d Cavalry Regiment on 28 Sep 28 Sep 1861. Promoted to full Farrier on 1 Aug 1862 and mustered out on 3 Oct 1864 at Davenport IA.
Listed as Charter member of First Church of North Madison: Lucy A. BOWEN.
Obituary. 1914. Obituary - Mrs. H.H. BOWEN Ella Leona BOWEN, wife of Rev. H.H. BOWEN, was born at Tonica, Illinois, Oct. 10, 1873, and died at Daytona Beach, Fla., Nov 24, 1914, age 41 years 1 month and 14 days. Death was caused by ptomaine poisoning, complicated with mercurial poisoning, Her suffering was very great, but she was patient through it all. The firs three years of her life was [sic] spent at and near Tonica. Then her parents moved to Ringgold county Ia. and lived for 8 years four miles south of Mt. Ayr. Then they moved to Rooks county, Kansas and lived on a farm in Alcona township until their daughter was married, April 9th, 1893. She married a Methodist Preacher with the intention of being a Methodist Preacher's wife. With her husband they served the church at Webster, Kansas one year, then Bristow one year then Webster another year, then Marvin three years until 1899, when they were appointed to Glen Elder where they served three years, then Beloit Circuit two years, Kirwin two years and Ellis five years. All these charges were in the Northwest Kansas Conference. Four years ago Nov. 17, 1910, they were sent to serve the Daytona Beach charge, where the deceased was active in all lines of church work. Of their children, Paul Humphries died in infancy. The others, Olga Ruth, Herbert Herldon, Joyce Ralph, Helen Mary, Grace Brunett, Thomas Francis and Lyle Ellis, remain to comfort their father. A brother and two sisters, Roy W. COAN of Des Moines, Iowa, Mrs. Mary FRANCIS of Gravity, Iowa, and Mrs. Ivy FRANKLIN of Red Oak Iowa were unable to attend the funeral because of the distance. The deceased was converted in her 18th year. She had been a member of the church all her life. Her life has been a constant growth in grace, usefulness, and consecrated service and devotion to her family. She was trained for her life's work in the Congregational Academy at Stockton, Kansas, and in the Kansas Wesleyan University at Salina, Kansas. She was very highly constituted, and of sensitive, musical and poetical temperament. She loved the beautiful everywhere. Her dying wish was to get well and be with and serve her family and her church. Her last words were: "I am going to my savior." During her last illness she repeatedly recited and sang the hymn: It is well with my soul. Mrs. BOWEN had been in the usual health, and was pursuing the usual activities of life, when, Nov. 13, 1914, she was suddenly seized with a severe attack of ptomaine poisoning, probably complicated by a course of calomel she had taken earlier in the week. In about 30 minutes she suffered an almost total collapse of all the functions of the body. After four days she rallied somewhat and the doctors and nurse thought she would recover. Then great prostration and other complications ensued, and she sank slowly until death relieved her. The funeral was held at Seabreeze Avenue M.E. church, where she worked so faithfully and effectually in the Master's cause. The service was in charge of Rev. R.A. CARNINE, D.D., Superintendent of the Jacksonville District. He was assisted by Rev. J.N. ELDER, of Daytona, Rev. J.J. TREADWELL, of New Smyrna, and Rev. D.H. RUTTER of St. Augustine. Many floral tributes were sent by the various church societies and sympathizing friends. The body was laid to rest in Pinewood cemetery, Daytona Beach, Florida. TO REV. H.H. BOWEN AND FAMILY Weep not for her who so calmly is sleeping--/She is at rest, her suffering is o'er./She has gone to the land/Where no sorrow can enter./To meet there the ones/Who have gone on before.//Hard it will be to part with your loved one,--/She upon whom you could always depend;/But think of the rest/Which her Savior hath given,/Rest, sweet rest,/Which shall ne'er have an end.//God will be with you this hour of sorrow;/Trust in His infinite mercy and love;/And the tears which now fall/Here on earth for your loved one,/Will be all wiped away,/"In the mansion above."//Submit to God's will tho' your heart's filled with sadness;/He is your friend; He will with you remain./And oh, it will turn/Even sorrow to gladness,/To know that in Heaven/You shall have her again.//So weep not for her who has gone to the homeland;/Some day you shall see her--clasp her dear hand,/Rejoice in the hope/Of the Heavenly meeting!/That which now seemeth hard/You shall then understand. Yours with sympathy, Mrs. Fred STEWART, Seabreeze, Fla.

BOWEN at the home of his youngest son at Mt. Zion, Georgia. He suffered a paralytic stroke and passed away two days following, on Tuesday, December 3, at the age of 68 years. Bert, as he was more familiarly known here where he grew to manhood, was the oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. R.D. BOWEN, pioneer settlers of this community who died many years ago. He was born at Shellrock, Iowa, and came here with his parents when he was aged five years. He attended the Smith Center schools and continued his studies for the ministry. Rev. BOWEN preached at churches of the Methodist Episcopal faith at various paces [sic] in Kansas and later was transferred to the south and had charges in Florida both as pastor and later as presiding elder in that state and Georgia. For the past three hears he had been on a retired ministers salary. His wife died about five years ago and seven children are left to mourn the passing of a kind and loving father. They are Herbert H. BOWEN, Cincinnatti [sic], Ohio; Olga and Joyce of DeLand, Fla; Grace of Chattanooga, Tenn; Tom of Daytona Beach, Fla; Helen living in Virginia, and Lyle of Mount Zion, Georgia. Rev. BOWEN is also survived by four sisters, Stella and Grace, living in California, Mabel of Omaha, Nebr., and Mrs. Carrie WILLIAMS, who lives in the Stuart Community in Smith Co and one brother, Walter BOWEN of Concordia. Mrs. C.C. BURR and Elmer HAYS of this city are cousins of the deceased.
Obituary, Smith Co Pioneer: Death of Rev. Bert BOWEN. End Came at The Home of a Son In Georgia. There are still a good many people in Smith Center and vicinity who will remember Bert BOWEN, who grew to manhood in this city, and regret to learn of his death. He passed away December 3, at the home of his youngest son, Lyle, near Mt. Zion, Ga., and his body was laid to rest in the cemetery at that place. The deceased, who was a retired Methodist minister after many years of active service, and at one time in Florida, a district superintendent, was reared in Smith Center, coming here when a small boy with his parents the late R.D. BOWEN and wife. He received his common school education at this place, and took to the ministry about forty years ago. He was one of a family of seven children, only one of whom, Mrs. Carrie WILLIAMS of Webster township, continues to make her home in this Co, Grace and Stella live at some point in California; Mabel in Omaha, Nebr., and Walter in Concordia, this state. The BOWEN family, whose head was a blacksmith and at one time owner and publisher of The Pioneer, that he run as a Democratic sheet, was highly respected during the residence here, and the old timers remaining hereabouts remember its members most kindly. Bert, whose age was 68 years at death, was twice married and father of seven surviving children as follows: Herbert H., of Cincinnati, Ohio; Olga of DeLand, Fla; Grace of Chattanooga, Tenn; Joyce of DeLand, Fla; Tom of Dayton, Fla; Helen at some point in Virginia, and Lyle at whose home he died.
Obituary, Smith Co Pioneer, 18 July 1935: Died in Pennsylvania. Mrs. W.H. NELSON of this place received word a few days ago of the death of her sister-in-law, Mrs. Millie BOWEN THOMPSON, last Friday in a Pennsylvania town where she had resided for many years. Her age was in the early sixties, and we are told she had taught school up to within a year of her death. She was the second child of R.D. BOWEN and wife, early Smith Center pioneers, and left our town more than 40 years ago. Her father long since deceased, was owner and editor of The Pioneer close to fifty years ago, running it as a Democratic sheet. As we remember Millie, she was a bright, winsome girl while in this city, and quite popular with all classes when she grew up. She is survived, we believe, by two brothers and four sisters. Of these, only one, Mrs. Carrie WILLIAMS of Webster township, remains in Smith Co. One of the brothers, Walter, resides in Concordia, as he has for many years, and the other, Rev. Bert BOWEN has been a Methodist minister in Florida for about fifteen years.

Memorial. Orville WYSS. Nov 1993. Transcript Number 29006 documents minutes of the general faculty report on the Memorial resolution committee for Orville WYSS. Special committee of the general faculty to prepare Memorial resolution for Orville WYSS, Prof. emeritus, Department of microbiology, as filed with the secretary of the general factory the following port. H. Paul KELLEY, Secretary The General Faculty In memoriam Orville WYSS. Doctor Orville WYSS, professor emeritus of microbiology, died November 11, 1993, in Brush, Colorado. He was born in Medford, Wisconsin on September 10, 1912, and attained his early education there. In 1937, the University of Wisconsin Madison awarded him the B.S. in bacteriology and the M.S. and PhD in 1938 and 1941, respectively, also in bacteriology. His doctoral supervisor was Dr. WILSON, a pioneer in research on nitrogen fixation in the bacteria of the genus Azobacter. The interest he developed while under Dr. WILSON's tuteledge brought Dr. WYSS national attention in the physiology of nitrogen fixation in the organisms concerned with this process in nature. In 1941, Orville accepted a research position with Wallace Tiernan, Inc., a pharmaceutical concern, and the same year married Margaret BEDELL in Nutley, New Jersey. His work with antifungal substances at Tiernan led to the development of Desenex, the commercially successful products so widely marketed after 50 years. In 1945, Dr. WYSS, joined the faculty of the University of Texas as associate professor of bacteriology, in 1950 was promoted to professor, the rank he held until his retirement and subsequent death. On the death of professor and chairman O.B. WILLIAMS, in 1959, WYSS became chairman of the department, now renamed microbiology, and certainly (?) capacity until 1969. He returned to the chairmanship for the 1975-1976 school year and afterward served full-time teaching duties until his retirement in 1983. During Orville's years as chairman, the department grew from the faculty of 7 to 15; the expansion included nationally prominent individuals who were attracted to Texas by his presence. Orville WYSS supervised the work of some 70 graduate students, 10 of whom became chairmen of their own departments, five became Deans, and one the Provost of a major university. Students went from Austin to many of the great universities of the world, to important positions in industry, and to government laboratories. WYSS' total contribution to American science must include the influence that the teaching had not only had on the students but also on the students of the students. The notion of intellectual progeny of a gifted teacher applies well to professor WYSS. #20997 WYSS' research contributions included important discoveries on the mutational effects of ultraviolet radiation. He and his students found that irradiating complex bacterial growth media led to the production of peroxides which were mutagenic and lethal cells, and this work in turn contributed to our understanding of the mechanisms of action of ultraviolet radiation. His studies on Azobacter cysts served as the fulcrum for understanding the nature of these chemically - and physically - resistant structures. His laboratory also characterized viruses which parasitize azobacters. Dr. WYSS published the first paper on non-nif mutants of azobacter including one which required adenine for growth. While his contribution to the knowledge of the azobacter is of major importance, his work is not limited to those bacteria. He also made vital contributions to the study of transformation competence, of the capsule of hydrocarbon - utilizing bacteria and event symptoms enzymes which hydrolyze bacterial capsules. Together with Prof. Marie MOREAU, he helped describe the fungal spores which circulated in the Southwestern air and the role in allergies. His work in Antarctica led to the identification of much of the microbiota flora of that land, and recognition of this the board of geographic names designated a 9400 foot peak in the Queen Elizabeth range in Antarctica as Mount WYSS. Dr. WYSS published some hundred and fifteen research articles, several monographs, and two textbooks entitled "Microorganisms" and "Man in Elementary Microbiology." He serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Bacteriology and Applied Microbiology as well as reader for many other journals. He also served on the review panels of the National Science Foundation (NSF), National Institutes of Health (NIH), Research Corporation and other granting agencies. WYSS was a member of various scientific societies and held various offices including the presidency of the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) in 1964, Texas chapters of Sigma XI and Phi Kappa Phi, and the board of governors of the development of the Texas branch of ASM, for which he received the distinguished service award. He served as consultant to the NSP Antarctica research program, the chemical-biological-radiological agency and also various industrial concerns. Perhaps his most cherished honor was the endowment made to the University of Texas by a group of his former students and friends for the creation of the Orville WYSS Scholarship. Dr. WYSS' work was well supported by a succession of research grants from the major granting agencies as well as several travel grants which made his teaching and research available to scientists in Australia, several European countries, the Soviet Union, Nepal, and Antarctica. Finally, Orville WYSS' effect on science must be viewed in personal terms He taught his students the place of microbiology and science and the difference between science and life. He nurtured the search for knowledge, for self-respect, and for personal honor. His ? remember also that Orville's former students remember him as a friend and colleague. He was a philosopher, teacher, mentor, and much more. Prof. WYSS is survived by his wife, Dr. Margaret WYSS, three daughters, ? and Jane and Patty, and two granddaughters. This Memorial resolution was prepared by a special committee consisting of James R. WALKER (Chair), Drs. Leodocia M. POPE and Alice G. REINARZ, with the assistance of G. Roland VELA, professor of microbiology at the University of Texas, and Delbert M. SHANKEL, professor of microbiology and special counselor to the Chancellor, the University of Kansas at Lawrence. Distributed to voting emirs members and faculty of the Department of microbiology, the Dean of the College of natural sciences, the Executive Vice President and Provost, and the president on August 31, 1995.

Synopsis:
Text from History of Butler Co, p. 316: George ADAIR was a little lad of six summers when brought by his parents to Butler Co, where he has resided continuously since, covering a period of sixty years. There is no resident of Shell Rock whose connection with the district antedates his and as a pioneer settler he has witnessed almost the entire growth and development of this part of the Co. On the 14th of May, 1864, when a young man of seventeen years, he enlisted as a member of Company E., Forty-fourth Iowa Volunteer Infantry and served for one hundred days. He has always been actuated by a spirit of patriotism and has ever taken a helpful part in upholding the interests of Co, state and nation. His reminiscences concerning this Co are most interesting. He recalls the first Fourth of July celebration which he ever witnessed. In fact it was the first held in this Co, the celebration taking place at Shell Rock in 1855. The people came in ox teams and on that occasion nearly every man, woman and child in the Co was here. Through his boyhood, George ADAIR attended the district schools and worked in his father's sawmill. Since 1869 he has been identified with agricultural pursuits and is now the owner of three hundred and sixty acres of valuable land two miles southeast of Shell Rock. He still gives supervision to the place, although his son is actively operating it. The farm is splendidly improved and has upon it an immense barn fifty-two by ninety feet, also two concrete silos and every modern improvement. The place is known as the Oakley Stock Farm and Mr. ADAIR was the first breeder of Holstein cattle in this locality, continuing the breeding business for thirty years. While he is not active in the operation of the farm, he keeps in touch with every feature of the business and, moreover, he has for the past sixteen years been president of the Shell Rock Creamery Company, a cooperative creamery business which is incorporated. For fourteen years he was president of the Butler Co Farms Institute and he is a life member of the Co Fair Association, of which he has been a director and treasurer. His association with the last two organizations indicates his deep interest in all that pertains to the development and improvement of the Co along agricultural lines. In 1872, Mr. ADAIR was united in marriage to Miss Ella MASON, who was born in Northampton, Massachusetts, July 5, 1853, and in 1856 was brought to Iowa by her parents, who located in Madison township, this Co, but afterward removed to Cedar Falls and later came to Shell Rock. Her father, William MASON, was a native of England and was a woolen manufacturer. After coming to Iowa he purchased a half interest in a woolen mill in Shell Rock. While in Massachusetts, he married Amelia MURGATROYD, also a native of England. Mr. and Mrs. ADAIR became the parents of five children.
From the Andrew RALSTON Annals, 1932. Meet the President. Out at Shell Rock, Iowa, dwells our new President, George ADAIR, almost 85 years young, and gracious host for the coming Fourth Annual Reunion, to be held on his farm, adjoining Shell Rock, Saturday, August 19, 1933. He was a lad of six summers when he came with his father, George Washington ADAIR, in 1853, to establish the town. The father asked a Sioux Indian where would be the best location for a new town, and the Indian told him he would never be disturbed by winds or floods at the present site. The prediction has come true, for in 80 years Shell Rock has been safe from any of these forces of nature. He is the last survivor of the Civil War soldiers in Butler Co, and stands six feet tall, every inch a RALSTON soldier, with eyes upward and on. It will be worth any RALSTON's while to drive across several states to meet him, for he extends the glad hand of welcome out to all of us. "SEE YOU AT SHELL ROCK," is the new RALSTON slogan for the coming year. Already word comes of many who are starting to put small coins away in the old pewter teapot back in the top shelf of the corner cupboard, so that they may not miss the fine things in store for them next August 19th.
Obituary. Find-A-Grave. Allen Lester ADAIR. Allen's cremated remains were not initially taken after his death and were available at the Oregon State Hospital to anyone who is related. They were claimed by his grand niece in 2014 and in November 2014 they were scattered on the farm where Allen was born in the area where the house was before it was taken down. His name and birth and death dates are on a plaque attached to the back of his father's tombstone in Riverview Cemetery in Shell Rock, Iowa. According to family records Allen's first name is spell ALLEN, although he signed his name "ALLAN" on the WWI and WWII draft registration forms. Those forms also indicated his birthdate is 8/31/1879 in Iowa. He is the son of Ella MASON and George ADAIR. His siblings include: Claude Duval, Alson G. (who died at the age of 2), Ada Lucille, and William. At the time of the 1880 census, Allen was an infant living with his parents and 6 year old brother Claude in Shell Rock, Butler County, Iowa, where his father was a farmer. Allen attended elementary school, but did not go on to High School. His siblings were given portions of the family farm to start their own farms. Allen was given a horse. He became a hired hand for a farmer. From letters it appears e wanted to return home to work on the farm, but that wasn't allowed. Allen was considered the "black sheep" of the family. About 1903 Allen married Hilda Etilia BENSON a Swedish immigrant who had come to the US in 1899. They had three children: Ella May (born in 1909) and Esther (in 1912) and George "Mason" (born about 1915). During the 1910 census Allen and his family were living in Union, Ada County, Idaho where Allen was a "dry farmer." During the 1920 census the growing family lived in Boise, Idaho and Allen was an auto mechanic. By the time of the 1930 census Allen and Hilda had divorced and Allen was living in Riddle, Douglas County in rural southern Oregon with his 15 year old son Mason. Allen did odd jobs. In 1930 Hilda and Esther were living in Oakland, California. Hilda managed apartments and Esther was a waitress. Daughter Ella was also living in Oakland with her husband Joseph WAITE. In 1940 Hilda was living in San Francisco with Ella. In 1942 Allen was living in Vale in eastern Oregon. Before entering the state hospital he was living with his son Mason in Medford, Oregon. This was the same as his son Mason's address. On March 26, 1948 Allen was admitted to the Oregon State Hospital, a residential facility in Salem, Oregon for the treatment of people with mental illness. He was diagnosed with "psychosis due to arteriosclerosis." Just 16 days later he died at the state hospital of hypertensive cardiovascular renal disease which he had had for about 8 years. Son Mason was notified that the hospital had the ashes and that they could be sent to him C.O.D. if he would request them. It is very possible that the son did not have the money to handle this. More information on unclaimed cremains is available at http://www.oregon.gov/oha/amh/osh/pages/cremains.aspx. A book by David MAISEL and a documentary by Ondi TIMONER and Robert JAMES both entitled Library of Dust also provide more information.

Synopsis:
Allen ALLBURN was from Sioux City, IA
Fred SCHAAF was a Chief Dispatcher with the Chicago Northwestern Railroad, based in Sioux City, Woodbury Co, IA.
Biography from the Past and Present of Woodbury County, beginning page 386: Mrs. Elizabeth E. ALLBURN. Mrs. Elizabeth E. ALLBURN, of Sioux City, was born at Shell Rock, Butler county, Iowa, October 27, 1855. Her father, George W. ADAIR, was a native of West Virginia and died in 1879 at the age of sixty-seven years. He was a farmer and mill owner and became one of the pioneer residents of Iowa, arriving this state in 1837. Here he founded the town of Shell Rock in 1853 and made his home there from that time until his demise. He took a very active and influential part in public progress and improvement and he was one of the leading members of the Methodist Episcopal church, assisting in the building of that church and contributing generously to its support. He voted with the Democratic party. His wife, who in her maidenhood was Elizabeth E SMITH, was born in Ohio and died in May, 1902, at the age of seventy-nine years. She was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church and in her daily life exemplified her Christian faith. Unto Mr. and Mrs. ADAIR were born nine children: Mary J., the deceased wife of Ephriam TOWN; John, of Sioux City, who served throughout the Civil war as a member of Company B, Seventh Iowa Volunteer Infantry, and was wounded at the battle of Belmont, in which he was taken prisoner; Lucy A., the wife of Ralph D. BOWEN, of Smith Center, Kansas; George, a retired farmer of Shell Rock, Iowa, who served for one hundred days in the Civil war as a musician; Walter W., who is a business man of Auburn, Nebraska; Mrs. ALLBURN; Sarah M., the wife of Thomas RAWLINGS, who is living in Wakefield, Nebraska; Blanche, who is the widow of Charles HERRINGTON and resides in Wakefield, Nebraska; and Nettie E., who is the wife of George E. MEADE, of Shell Rock, Iowa. Mrs. ALLBURN acquired her early education in the public schools of Shell Rock, Iowa, and afterward attended Cornell College at Mount Vernon, Iowa. She came to Sioux City in 1876 and was here engaged in teaching vocal and instrumental music until 1879. On Christmas evening of that year she gave her hand in marriage to Allen A. ALLBURN, who was born in Columbus City, Iowa, January 14, 1857, and was a son of Charles and Susan ALLBURN, both of whom were natives of Pennsylvania. His father was a contractor and brick mason in former years and is now deceased. At the age of twelve years Mr. ALLBURN began work in a printing office at Columbus City and was later employed in Burlington, Iowa, and Washington, D.C., working on the Chronicle in the latter city. In the spring of 1878 he came to Sioux City and has since been in the employ of the Journal off and on for twenty-six years, though at times he has been with other companies. He has held the positions of compositor, foreman and telegraphic editor and is at present linotype man. Fraternally he is a member of the Ancient Order of United Workmen and the Degree of Honor, and politically he is a Republican. Unto Mr. and Mrs. ALLBURN have been born two children, James M. and Grace A. For the past five years Mrs. ALLBURN has been superior recorder of the Degree of Honor of the Ancient Order of United Workmen and thus has charge of twenty-two grand lodges and one hundred lodges, all of which are under her direct supervision. She has been a member of the order since it was organized in Sioux City and was elected chief of honor in 1894. She represented Prosperity Lodge at the organization of the grand lodge of Iowa at Cedar Rapids in May, 1896, and was there elected past grand chief of honor and was made a representative of the grand lodge of Iowa to the first session of the superior lodge, which met in Buffalo, New York, in June, 1896. At the latter place she was made a member of the finance committee and performed her work so acceptably that at the session of the superior lodge in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, was made chairman of the committee. A year later, at Asbury Park, New Jersey, she was re-appointed to the position and elected superior recorder of the Sioux Falls session in 1900. In the year 1901 at Buffalo, New York, in 1902, at Portland, Oregon, in 1903 at St Paul, Minnesota, and 1905 at Chattanooga, Tennessee, she was re-elected to the office, each time without opposition,. From the supreme lodge at Buffalo in 1902 she received the highest commendation because of her most capable service. She has created a new system of cards and records by which the classification of ages is reached and thus an idea of the workings of the lodge is easily obtained. The headquarters of the Women's Auxiliary of the fraternity are at Sioux City, Iowa. Mrs. ALLBURN was one of the organizers of the Beethoven Club and has probably done more for it than any other member. She was president of the club for four years and resigned to give her whole attention to her present position. In her younger days Mrs. ALLBURN produced a number of operas with home talent, giving very successful entertainments. She has great ability and is a tireless worker, and beside being a musician she is an art critic and has been employed as musical editor in connection with the daily papers of Sioux City. Synopsis:
Living in Torrington, WY in 1944 (estate papers of Thomas O. RAWLINGS indicate leaving his estate to Blanche in Torrington)
Blanche is indicated as being interred in the cemetery but is not carved on the stone. She may possibly be actually buried in Torrington, where she was living with her daughter at the time of her death. I see a trip to WY in my future....
Blanche and Sarah were living with Thomas and Sarah RAWLINGS in the 1910 Census (but not in 1900 or 1920). Presumably after Sara married Erwin, Blanche went to live with them.
