Blair Pilot-Tribune, Undated. An Interview with Nels JENSEN.
Indians - he recalls two experiences. One day when he was at home with
his sisters Emma and Mary, they spotted a load of Indians headed toward
their home. All three became frightened. They ran into the house
and hid under a bed in an upstairs room. The Indians entered the home,
helped themselves to something to eat and departed. The other time his
father was home when a group of Indians called at the JENSEN farm.
His father instructed Nels to obtain some wheat for them. He went to
the grain bin, put some wheat in a sac, handed it to the Indians who
returned it with the word, "not enuf." He took the sack and added
enough wheat to satisfy the Indian, who smiled, and was on his way.
When he was a youngster, the JENSEN farm included 600 acres of land.
Today, it is 240 acres; and his son, Harold, lives on the farm. When
walking plows, cultivating etc., were mentioned, he stated, "Yes, I have
walked behind all of them. There isn't a foot of ground on that farm
that I haven't stepped on." His parents had about 25 milk cows on the
farm. That meant getting up early to assist with the milking. He
was usually assigned six cows to milk. They would make butter out of
the cream and sold it to a store in Omaha known as the Peter Beck store.
His father would make the trip to Omaha about every two weeks. First
Trip to Omaha. He recalls his first trip to Omaha. His father
took him, Pete and Jim along to buy them new suits. They started,
bright and early, and arrived in Omaha late that afternoon. It was a
thrilling experience; and especially having a ride on a street car, pulled
by a team of horses. Trips to Blair? not very common; but always
on the Fourth of July to attend the celebration. He remembers the
first pair of overshoes he owned. One day his father returned from
Blair with overshoes for all the children. It was a gala occasion, and
they even wanted to wear them in the house. A year later, he obtained
his first pair of felt boots. That called for another celebration.
Hauling grain to Blair was different than today. They would take two
teams and two wagons and start early in the morning. Enroute to Blair,
they were forced to unhook the team and double up the horse power in order
to make it over the hills they encountered along the road. Hauls Rock.
He recalls when the Blair Courthouse was constructed. Some rock was
shipped into Blair. They found it was not suitable to use in the
construction of the building. His father purchased the rock and Nels
and his brother, Pete, were assigned to haul it home. They spent 10
days hauling rock from Blair to their home. Sometimes they made two
trips. That meant leaving home at an early hour, loading the rock,
taking it home, and returning for another load. That was 32 miles of
traveling by team and wagon, plus loading and unloading the rock.
During the years he farmed he had between 25 and 30 head of cows, fed about
40 head of cattle each year, and had between 25 and 100 head of hogs.
He recalls topping the market with a load of cattle, the price $5.25.
Sold hogs for 31/2¢ a pound. Eggs were 10
Obituary. Blair Pilot, 16 Aug 1911. (Anna JENSEN's mother) Mrs. TRUHLSEN Dies. Mrs. Nels TRUHLSEN died at the family home in this city last Wednesday evening at 9:20 after having suffered for a long period of time with a cancer. Deceased was 59 years, 10 months and 7 days old. Mrs. TRUHLSEN had been afflicted with a cancer for several years, but it was not until after she had been operated on in the hope of removing the cause that her condition became critical. After the operation the wound failed to heal and continually grew more aggravated until death came to her relief. Deceased was born in Fredrichsholm Schleswig, Germany on the 2nd of October, 1851, and was married to Neils TRUHLSEN on the 22nd of September 1872, coming to America with her husband two years later and settling on a farm near Calhoun. To this union six children were born, one having died a number of years ago. Besides a husband there are left Peter, who lives north of Blair, Christian and Henry, of Herman, Mrs. Anna JENSEN of this city, and Mrs. Frank SIERT who lives west of Blair. The funeral services were held at the German Lutheran church last Saturday. Rev. ECKHARDT speaking in the German language and the Rev. J.D. WEIN, of Orum, officiating in the English language. Mrs. TRUHLSEN was an ideal wife, a kind and good mother, and her death will be a distinct loss to all who enjoyed the pleasure of her acquaintance. She was a patient sufferer, and although she fully realized that death was only a matter of a short time she bore her misery with a patient suffering that was all but sublime. - The Democrat
Obituary. Blair Tribune, 16 Aug 1911. (Anna JENSEN's mother) Mrs. Niels TRUHLSEN. After being a sufferer for many years with that dread disease, cancer, the Death Angel called at the home of Mr. Niels TRUHLSEN at 9:20 last Wednesday evening and relieved the tired body of his loving wife, Margauriete [sic], from all earthly pain, which since last September has been almost a torture. Mrs. TRUHLSEN had been a victim of the disease for several years, but her condition did not become serious until last September, at which time she was made helpless, and all that medical skill could do proved of no avail and she steadily grew worse. In February of this year Dr. LORD of Omaha performed an operation on the suffering lady, but at the time he informed the husband that there were no hopes of her recovery, that the disease had gained such headway that to check it then was an impossibility. This fact, however, was kept from her, but several weeks before she passed away she realized that the end was inevitable and oftimes expressed her willingness to go, and when at last her eyes closed in death, it was with a sigh of relief that her loved ones commended her soul to the One who said, "Come until Me all ye that are weak and heavy laden and I will give you rest," because no earthly power could alleviate her pain and suffering. All the members of her immediate family were present during the last moments except a daughter, Mrs. Hans JENSEN, whose week-old daughter prevented her coming, but as her mother was unconscious two days before her death she would not have been recognized had she came [sic]. Marguerite HANSEN was born in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, October 2, 1851, the daughter of good old German stock, Mr. and Mrs. Chris HANSEN, now living in Sheridan county, this state. In 1872, she was married to Niels [sic] TRUHLSEN and two years later came to America, coming direct to Washington county, making their home at Ft. Calhoun, where Mr. TRUHLSEN worked as a farm laborer for five years, after which they removed to Blair, where they have since resided and became prosperous and highly respected citizens. To this family six children were born, five of whom are living in Washington county and are Peter, Chris and Henry, the sons, and Mrs. Annie JENSEN and Mrs. Lena SIERT, the daughters. Short services were held Saturday afternoon at 1 o'clock at the home on Lincoln street, the German minister, Rev. Mr. ECKHART, speaking many words of praise of the life of the estimable lady over those mortal remains friends had gathered to pay homage. Church services were held one hour later from the German Lutheran church and was attended by a large concourse of sorrowing friends who showed their devout respect for the departed by their presence at the last sad rites. The body was buried in Blair cemetery and among the relatives who were present when the remains were lowered in the grave were the aged parents, both over 80 years old, who had come from Sheridan county when they learned of her death.
Obituary. Blair Pilot, 14 Dec 1921. (Anna JENSEN's father) Nels TRUHLSEN was found dead in his room at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Nels M. JENSEN, last Wednesday afternoon. He suffered a severe paralytic stroke last May from which he partially recovered but never regained the use of his left side. He became despondent and thought he was too much in the way because of his helplessness, so he secured a trunk strap and tied it around the bed post and thus ended his life. The funeral was held at the JENSEN home at 1 o'clock Friday afternoon, the service being conducted by Rev. T.S. KESTERSON, of Herman. The body was laid to rest in the Blair cemetery by the side of his wife, whose death occurred August 9, 1911. Mr. TRUHLSEN was born in Sweden September 27th, 1847, and was therefore, 74 years of age last September. His parents moved to Schleswig-Holstein, Germany and he grew to manhood there. He was married to Miss Margareta HANSEN and their oldest son, Peter, was born there. They came to America 48 years ago and settled first near Ft. Calhoun. Later he was in partnership with J.G. SMITH on the farm west of town. Still later he bought the farm Fred JONES is now on and lived there for a number years, moving to Blair fifteen years ago. He sold his residence on west Lincoln street about a year ago and since his illness has made his home with the children, Mrs. Nels M. JENSEN, Mrs. Frank SIERT, Peter, Chris and Henry TRUHLSEN. He leaves one sister, Mrs. Peter L. HANSEN, of Omaha. Mr. TRUHLSEN was always a good citizen, jovial and friendly in disposition and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. The bereaved relatives have the sincere sympathy of many friends.
Obituary. Blair Enterprise, 15 Dec 1921. (Anna JENSEN's father) Nels TRUHLSEN Gone. Mr. Nels TRUHLSEN, well known early settler died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Nels M. JENSEN, of near Kennard, Dec. 7. Mr. TRUHLSEN was born in Sweden but later went to Germany where he was married and in 1873 came to this country, settling in Calhoun where he lived for many years. Later he purchased a farm near Blair, where he lived until he moved to this city where he was living at the time of the death of his wife on August 9, 1911. From then until last winter he made his home in Blair and visited at the homes of his children as he chose. Mr. and Mrs. TRUHLSEN were the parents of five children, two girls and three boys, all living in the county and highly respected citizens and to them the loss of their father is great. Mr. TRUHLSEN was a man of the best of habits, a man whose integrity was above reproach and whose cheerful sunny disposition made him a general favorite and his old-time friends miss him as they miss a brother. He was stricken with paralysis last winter from which he never fully recovered and feeling his uselessness he became despondent. Every care and kindness possible was shown him by his children and he was their main thought. The funeral was held from the home of his daughter Mrs. Nels M. JENSEN, with Rev. Obituary.
Blair Enterprise, 20 Aug 1998. Eleanor DeVINNEY JENSEN,
87. Eleanor DeVINNEY JENSEN, 87, a prominent Washington Co
farm woman and community activist, died Sunday, Aug. 16, 1998, in San Mateo,
Calif., where she had recently moved to be near her son and his
family. She granted her body to the Stanford Unviersity Medical
Research School for detailed rheumatoid arthritis study. After this
study, she will be buried with the JENSEN family in the Blair
Cemetery. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be 10 a.m.
Saturday, October 17, 1998, at the Herman Federated Church with Rev. David MASTEN
officiating. A reception will follow. Eleanor DeVINNEY
was born March 2, 1911, in Chunchula, Ala., to Joseph and Marie DeVINNEY.
Six years later, after developing a lumber mill, the DeVINNEY family
returned to a family farm near Blair. She graduated from Blair High
School in 1928 with high honors and was a state champion in debate.
She debated that the origin of a civilized society is well-chosen
words. The debate topic was "Resolved, words and ideas are first
weapons of choice to correct human conflict." Through Normal
School courses, Eleanor received a teaching
certificate with her Blair degree. By age 21, she had taught for four
years at the eight-grade March country school. She emphasized classic
farm community concepts, cooperation, fundamental knowledge and the advance
of an idea from year to year. On May 20, 1932, she married Alton Byron
JENSEN. The couple farmed seven miles north of
Blair. Despite the effects of drought and severe economic depression
on farm life, the farm wife strongly believed in community activity.
She helped found and promote the Federation of Women's Clubs in Nebraska,
Blair Bench Club, Nebraska Farm Bureau, Blair Community Hospital, Pleasant
View Sunday School, Herman Eastern Star and the Herman Federated
Church. She believed that community activities not only served a great
purpose, but allowed her to meet grand people. As she was working to
develop the Federated Women's Club, she met Susie BUFFET, who one day
offered her a chance to purchase stock in a new company she and her husband,
Warren, were developing. The stock helped put the JENSEN
children through college. Eleanor was active in grass roots
politics. She once said, "In the Depression and War years, with a
name like Eleanor, you had to help the President." She was an
organist and often accompanied her husband. After suffering a stroke,
she moved to the Good Shepherd Lutheran Home in Blair. In October of
1996, decades after she gave up formal school teaching, she began working
with South School students in Blair on their reading and math skills through
an intergenerational program. She enjoyed teaching again, adding that
"It gives me something to do besides taking a nap." She is
survived by her daughter, Sally, of Oamah; her son, Larry, and his wife,
Noriko, of San Mateo; her sister, Irene DAVIS of Truckee, Calif.; her

Synopsis:
Engagement Announcement. Fall 1933. Former Blairite to Wed. Mr. and Mrs. Nels M. JENSEN announced the engagement of their daughter, Enid, last week, to Merel [sic] D. WARDELL, of Creighton, Nebr. No definite date for the wedding has been set although it will take place some time in October. Miss JENSEN is a Blair product, having been born and raised in this vicinity. She is a graduate of the Blair High school and has spent the past few years in Omaha where she has been employed. After their marriage the young couple will make their home near Creighton where they will engage in farming.
Biography: (Mary WARDELL's father) Date of Death: 17 Apr 1935. Memorial at Find-A-Grave: Dr. M.L. KILE Taken by Death. Victim of Sudden Heart Attack. Stricken by a heart attack shortly after supper last Wednesday evening, Dr. M.L. KILE, Creighton optometrist and resident of the city for 25 years, passed away about 10:30 o'clock. News of his death the following morning stunned friends and acquaintances for he was in apparent good health the previous day, being at his office until six o'clock in the evening. Death occurred after the attending physician had gone and at a time when it seemed as if he was resting easier and was about to fall asleep. The passing of Dr. KILE removes from the community one of its leading citizens. For well over a quarter of a century he practices optometry here and while of later years, he maintained only his office here, he had previously conducted part time offices at Center, Verdigre, Lynch, Niobrara, Verdel and Orchard. When, eventually, he restricted his practice. Devoted to his family, loyal to his friends, upright in his dealings, he won for himself esteem and respect that only such attributes can win. He was a Master Mason for over 40 years and was a charter member of the Creighton Lions Club. His death is the first to occur in that organization. Funeral services were held Saturday morning at 10 o'clock. There were brief rites at the home, followed by services at the St. Mark's Episcopal church. The Rev. L.W. GANDY, Wayne, church pastor, officiated. Floral tributes were profuse and beautiful. The bouquets included one from Creighton business and professional men. Business houses were closed during the services. The church edifice accommodated less than half those, who assembled to pay their last respects to the deceased. Services at the grave were in charge of the Creighton Masonic Lodge. Interment was in Greenwood cemetery.
Obituary. Creighton News, 25 Apr 1935. (Mary WARDELL's father). Milford [sic?] L., the son of Ransome KILE and Mary POWERS KILE was born February 26, 1867 at Lowell, Indiana and passed away April 17, 1935 at the family home at Creighton, Nebraska. He was 68 years, one month and eighteen days old at the time of his death. As a boy of 12 he moved with his parents from Indiana to Griswold, Ia., where the family lived four years. In 1883, the KILE family moved to Nebraska, locating west of Plainview. Their first house in Nebraska was a sod one. He grew to manhood on his father's farm and subsequently, learned the jewelers trade. In 1900, he came to Creighton and opened a jewelry and watch repair department in Campbell's drug store. Later he studied optometry and in 1913 disposed of his jewelry business to devote full time to the practice of that profession. He was actively engaged thus, up to the day of his death, having his Creighton office for a period of 22 consecutive years. On February 9, 1905, he was united in marriage to Maude BUCKMASTER of Creighton. She, with their three children, are left to mourn. The children are: Dr. Marvin W., who followed in his father's profession, of Lincoln; Miss Mary, teaching at Wayne and Miss Dorothy, attending college at Wayne. His mother passed away in 1907, his father, a Civil War veteran, in 1933 at the age of 97. Five brothers also preceded him in death: Dr. Wm KILE of Plainview, who passed away in 1912; L.E. KILE of New Raymer, Colo, who [sic] death occurred in 1928 and three, who died in infancy. The deceased was the youngest of the six sons. Dr. KILE was a member of the Episcopal church and was actively affiliated with Creighton lodge and civic organizations, as well as the associations identified with the advancement of his profession.
