Synopsis:
The family arrived in the United States in 1849 or 1850 in NYC, NY.
Obituary. Cedar Rapids Evening Gazette. 22 October 1903. The Death of Henry F. MILLER. Was Prominent in Cedar Rapids Business Circles - Universally Popular. The funeral of Henry F. MILLER, whose death was chronicled in The Gazette last evening will take place Saturday afternoon at 3 o'clock from the residence, 403 Eighth avenue and will be conducted by Mt. Hermon lodge, A.F. & A.M. The remains will be laid at rest in the family lot at Oak Hill cemetery, beside those of his father and mother. Henry Frederickson MILLER was born in Philadelphia April 13 1833. He remained there until 1859, when he moved to Newport, Ky., and engaged in the plumbing business. At the opening of the civil war, Mr. MILLER was residing at Jeffersonville, Ind. He was elected orderly sergeant of the first company formed for the protection of the Ohio border. He was one of a party of three detailed to take Governor MOREHOUSE of Kentucky and Editor STORY of the Louisville Courier to the prison at Indianapolis for seditious utterances. A short time afterward he was one of a company formed to run down MORGAN and the band of guerillas who were carrying devastation and ruin through Indiana and Ohio. Mr. MILLER was a brave, conscientious soldier, and was never more enthusiastic then when relating experiences of the days when he fought for the defense of his country and the flag. On December 21, 1865, Mr. MILLER was married to Miss Isabella S. CRICHTON at La Porte, Ind. They moved to Cedar Rapids in 1876, and Mr. MILLER has been engaged in the plumbing business here since that time. With him in business was associated his son, William C. MILLER. Mr. MILLER had not been in the best of health since last spring. For the past two weeks he had been confined to his home and the end had been expected. When the final summons came yesterday afternoon Mr. MILLER closed his eyes in peaceful sleep and his should departed for the home beyond. By this death are bereaved a wife and five children, one son, William C. MILLER; four daughters, Mrs. George YUILL, Mrs. Ernest B. CAMERON, Miss Nellie MILLER, and Miss Stella MILLER. Mr. MILLER was one of a family of ten children. There are but four of that family left and they were at the bedside of their elder brother when he died. They are Godfrey F. MILLER of Topeka, Kan.; Mrs. Elizabeth STRICKER, Newport, Ky.; Mrs. Mary L. FLYNN, Kansas City, Mo., and Charles M. MILLER of Denver, Col., who is the junior member of the family. Frank C. MILLER of St. Louis and Mrs. William SPIEGEL of Cincinnati were present at the death of their uncle. Henry F. MILLER had always been prominent in the business circles of this city. He was a good citizen, a kind and loving husband and father, and a man who won the respect and esteem of everyone who made his acquaintance. His death is deeply mourned by the citizens of Cedar Rapids.
Obituary. Cedar Rapids Republican. 6 January 1917. Mrs. Henry MILLER. Mrs. Henry MILLER, a resident of Cedar Rapids since 1876, died early Friday morning at her home 202 Sixth avenue west. Obituary. The Cedar Rapids Tribune, Fri., May 4, 1923, p. 4, col. 2. George YUILL. After a year of mental agony and physical suffering such as but few men could have withstood and retained their poise, George YUILL has passed to a heavenly home. Uncomplainingly he bore his trials, courageously and to the end expressing the belief that he would recover. During the years of matured life he acted the part of a good citizen. In various official capacities he faithfully served the people who elected him to office. He typified that rugged sturdy type of pioneer Scotch ancestry to which much is due in the way of advancement and progress by the mid-west.
Text of History of La Porte Co, p. 848: James H. Crichton was born in the parish Inverrity, Scotland, March 28, 1804, and is a son of John and Ellen [sic] (PATTERSON) CRICHTON, deceased, also natives of Scotland. He learned the blacksmith's trade of his father when a boy. At the age of 16 he began for himself as a farm laborer, at six pounds a year, which is a little less than $30, and he lived on an allowance of 16 pounds of oatmeal a week, and about three quarts of milk daily. July 16, 1832, he married Miss Isabella Edward, by whom he has had 9 children; 8 of these are living, viz.: Wm. E., John C., Ellen, Isabella, Fannie, James, Mary and Rosanna. He came to America, and to this Co in 1850. He owns 320 acres of land, and resides on sec. 34. When he began in life he had nothing but energy and health for his capital.
