Carroll Co, OH, 1890. Adair Family. This family has been an important factor in the making of the history of Scotland and England, and also played an important part in the great American Revolution. Sir Robert ADAIR, born May 24, 1763, died October 3, 1855, was a noted English Ambassador to the courts of Vienna, Brussels and Constantinople. He negotiated the treaty of the Dardanelles, and retired in 1835 with the rank of privy counselor. Robin ADAIR and others of the same family have left an impress upon the period in which they lived. Cornelius ADAIR emigrated from Edinburgh, Scotland, to North Carolina, and one of his sons removed from there to Augusta Co, Va., before the War of the Revolution. One of the early settlers in North Carolina, whose name won at least a casual mention in history, was John ADAIR, the patriotic entry-taker (tax collector) of the District of Washington. In 1780 Gen. SEVIER was recruiting the army with which he defeated Gen. FERGUSON at Kings Mountain. his exchequer was low from frequent drafts o a similar nature, and he could not borrow money enough to finish fitting out the expedition. John ADAIR was the only man in the territory who had any money, and the plans of Gen. SEVIER were likely to fail for lack of money to buy horses and equipments. Gen. SEVIER suggested to John ADAIR that he should loan him the funds of the State that were in his possession. And the following, as recorded by tradition, was ADAIR's answer: "Colonel SEVIER, I have no right to make any such disposition of this money. It belongs to the impoverished treasury of North Carolina, but if the country is overrun by the British, liberty is gone. Let the money go too. Take it, if by its use the enemy is driven from the country. I can trust that country to vindicate and justify my conduct. Take it." SEVIER took it - twelve thousand seven hundred and thirty-five dollars, and the result was Kings Mountain. Ellen ADAIR, one of the daughters of Gen. ADAIR, of Flordia, is the central figure in the famous painting ordered after Webster's defense of Massachusetts, to decorate the walls of Faneuil Hall. Cornelius' son in August Co, Va., was the father of John, William, Cornelius, James and two daughters. John removed to the vicinity of Carlisle, Penn. William married Mary RAWLSTON, and also removed to Carlisle, Penn. John raised a family of two boys and one girl. James was a bachelor, and made his home with William. Cornelius and one married sister moved to Kentucky. John ADAIR, who commanded the Kentucky troops at the battle of New Orleans, was the predecessor of Henry CLAY in the United States Senate, and was inaugurated governor of Kentucky in 1820 - one of the men who have builded well their part of our American Government. William remained a few years at Carlisle, Penn., then removed to Ohio, thence to northern Indiana and thence to Iowa. William was a school teacher and followed the business of making pumps in the summer time. He enlisted at Carlisle, Penn., and served as a soldier in the War of 1812. The children of William and Mary RAWLSTON ADAIR were William, George W., John Newton, and one daughter, Mary. William and George W. located in Shell Rock, Iowa, and founded the Shell Rock flouring and woolen mills. Mary made her home with her elder brothers.
from The Andrew RALSTON Annals, Patriotic Number. MEET THE ADAIRS. Up until March of this year [1931] we did not know who all the ADAIRs were and where they lived. Mary RALSTON, third child of our forbear married William ADAIR in the Adams Co home on September 8, 1808. They first went to housekeeping at Carlisle, Penn'a., later moving to Lexington, Va., then to Amsterdam Ohio and then to LaGrange Co, Indiana, where the mother died in 1831. One son, John Newton ADAIR, remained at Leesville, Ohio and his family radiates from that point. Two younger brothers, George Washington ADAIR and William Andrew ADAIR, laid out the town of Shell Rock, Iowa, in 1857, and their families radiate from that point. A complete list of the Mary RALSTON ADAIR family, with their dates of birth, marriage and death, is being secured through the fine correspondence of Mrs. Ada ADAIR GARNER, a farmer's wife, of Shell Rock, Iowa, Rev. H.H. BOWEN, a Methodist District Superintendent of Mt. Zion, Georgia, Mrs. Adda ADAIR ADELL, former high school teacher, Manhattan, Kansas, and Mrs. Cara ADAIR HOSTERMAN, saleslady in the Josephe Horne Store, Pittsburgh, Pa. Your historian craves for you the joy he is getting from all this correspondence and what a fine lot of RALSTON folks you will meet, if you come to the reunion.

Synopsis:
History of Butler and Bremer Counties, IA, p. 722: William ADAIR, one of the pioneers of this part of Butler Co, is the fourth son of William and Mary (ROLLSTON) ADAIR, and was born near Lexington, Virginia on the 8th day of April, 1818. In 1826, the family moved to Jefferson Co, Ohio, where they remained three years and then located in LaGrange Co, Indiana, and here his mother died of consumption in the year 1831. During the year 1837, the family came west and settled in Cedar Co, Iowa, where Wilton Junction now stands and in this year also, his remaining parent died. William remained here two years and then located near where Cedar Rapids now stands, west of Marion. However, at that time there was not a house in the place, and the only building at Marion was one log cabin. Here he lived until the spring of 1855, when he came to Shell Rock. The fall before he had entered land on section 10 and soon after his arrival, he in company with his brother George W., built the first grist mill erected in the town. Ever since his settlement here, Mr. ADAIR has closely identified himself with the interests of his chosen town, and has spent both time and money in procuring its advancement. He is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and has ever lent a helping hand in the building up and strengthening of his, his favorite place of worship. He was married December 17, 1840, to Miss Sabrina WILLIAMS, and ten children have been born to them, four of whom are now living - Mary, now the wife of James GRAHAM, of Shell Rock; Sabrina, wife of Andrew COUNTRYMAN, of Ida Co, Iowa; Phoebe, wife of William FIELDS, of Marshaltown; Etta, now teaching at Clear Lake, Iowa. Mrs. ADAIR died February 17, 1963, and Mr. ADAIR subsequently married Miss Sarah E. LEONARD. They have one child - Viola, now at home.

Synopsis:
Obituary Information. Find-A-Grave. c Aug 1984. Della Elaine EVELAND. Thanks to FAG member qashqai (#47426475) for the following information: Elaine's parents divorced when she was quite young and she was raised by her paternal grandparents Alva A EVELAND (1885-1954) and Clara EVELAND (1886-1954). Her great grandparents are available from the grandparents sites at least on her father's side. She married Roy LEGGITT on her eighteenth birthday before she completed high school. Roy was stationed at the local Waverly Air Force Station at the time. She spent the next eighteen years traveling around the world with Roy as he pursued his Air Force career. As was the custom for Air Force wives of that generation, Elaine did not pursue a profession of her own. She was a full time mother and performed various volunteer and club work while Roy was in the Air Force. For several years after Roy retired Elaine worked at a local bath accessories store and later at the Miramar Naval Exchange in San Diego. Elaine and Roy separated in September 1981 with a final dissolution of the marriage in February, 1983. She was killed instantly when a drunk teenage driver ran a stop sign and drove in front of her at the intersection of Las Palmas Avenue and Bear Valley Parkway in Escondido, California. Because of the proximity of the accident to the Palomar Hospital, her eyes and several organs were salvaged for transplant. Her mother was Ethalyn Rose MONTROSS EVELAND, 1917-1989.

Guy worked as a night watchman for the Shield Bantam Co., Waverly, and on September 9, 1950 was united in marriage to Ethelyn Rose MONTROSS in Allison, Iowa. The couple made their home in Waverly and Guy began working for Walker Auto Salvage in 1955 where he worked for the next 28 years, retiring in 1983. In retirement Guy continued to salvage on his own. Ethelyn died on July 29, 1989 and Guy completely retired in 2006. Guy is survived by his daughter-in-law, Sandra HUFFRACKER of Lisbon, Iowa; three grandchildren, Josh BOHLEN (Allene WHITE) of Waverly, Amber (Brandon) SCHEIL of Mt. Vernon, Iowa, Brittany HUFFRACKER of Cedar Rapids; two great grandchildren, Cayden Lee SCHEIL and Dawson Jay SCHEIL, and two sisters, Emmajean WOOLRIDGE of Oskaloosa, Iowa, Betty (Curt) BETSINGER of Waverly; and one sister-in-law, Mathilda PIERCE of Waverly. Synopsis:
Find-a-Grave indicates Mark and Sarah emigrated about 1854.
Mark Sanford TAPLEY II was a veterinary surgeon and real estate agent in Chicago. He was a Civil War veteran from McHenry Co, IL. His son, Robert Sanford TAPLEY was a real estate agent in Chicago, IL.
Robert Sanford TAPLEY was a lawyer. Robert and Edith's story, as found in the census and marriage records is fascinating. Edith L. HATTEN of Mobile, AL, b. 25 Apr 1871, marries George S. WHITLOCK on 25 Jun 1891 in Chicago, IL. Present are her parents Thomas A. HATTEN and Martha F. REEDER. In the 1900 Census, Robert is living with his parents, Mark and Mary, in Chicago and boarding with them is Edith "F" (I attribute this to a census-taker's mistake) WHITLOCK and her two children, Laura and Gladys WHITLOCK. Their father is indicated as being born in MI which is where George S. WHITLOCK was born according to the marriage record and Edith is indicated as born in AL. In the 1910 census, Robert is married to Edith and has two children with the last name TAPLEY - first names Laura and Gladys and ages matching Laura and Gladys WHITLOCK. I can't find a marriage record for Robert and Edith but it seems pretty certain that between 1900 and 1910, they married and he either adopted the girls or they took his name. I've found some death records for George S. WHITLOCKs but none I can definitively prove are the correct George and none of them died between 1900 and 1910 so they either left him or he left them or they amicably divorced. I'll keep digging, of course. But it was a fun hunt and a bit of a logic puzzle. It's what makes genealogy fun and gives me a warm spot for Robert, Edith, Laura and Gladys. I hope they were happy!
